Oct 02, 2009 - Tom Thumb 100
It’s going to be down to the last lap of the last race to
learn who will wear the Pro Late Model Championship Jacket for 2009. Last year’s winner Johanna Long focused on the Super Late
Models this year, so it will be a new face.
Two competitive drivers are planning to be up front
to take the Tom Thumb 100 trophy, the title, the jacket and capture the night. Ronnie Smith has been a points leader for much of the year in his #27 Certified Plumbing car. At the 11th hour, Keith Thorpe’s #36 Flat Creek Trucking ride edged up to the front of the points pack. Both had to contend with Brandon Odom, David Jones, James Kimbrough and others during the year.
Now the strategy. Keith needs to finish ahead of Ronnie. He has only a slim 8 points lead. Anywhere Ronnie is on the last lap, Keith just needs to be looking back at Ronnie. Now you don’t think Ronnie is just going to let that happen do you?
He worked out a deal with Donald Long to put his #27 Pro Late Model Engine in the chassis of Long’s #11 Super Late Model. Nearly identical weight between the 2 cars, but Ronnie is planning on a lot easier to wheel it around the track for 100 laps. Long is a master at shock set up, and balancing the car to go. Now Ronnie has gotta try and stay ahead of the Championship leader, Keith Thorpe.
Oh did we mention, they are both more than capable, deserving, and they are good friends.
