4 Races – 3 New Leaders

After the checkered flags in three of the four race events on May 27th, 3 new division leaders emerged. The points earned year to date added up to the trio being on top of their division, even though none won their race. Marty White in the Sportsmen, Nathan Davis in the Modifieds, and Grant Enfinger, fastest qualifier in the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard Series who finished 2nd in his feature, all are now the points leaders. The Bomber divisions remains the realm of Curtis Faircloth. See the points standings at the bottom of this web page.

Grill Wins another for GARC

Chuck Corder Augie Grill is quite the company man. His Grand American Race Cars had dominated the last 10 Super Late Model events coming into the second Blizzard Series race Friday at Five Flags Speedway. Nothing changed for the Papa John’s 100. And it only got better for Grill. The Five Flags fan favorite held off a late charge from Grant Enfinger to snatch his first checkered flag in Pensacola this season, making it nine consecutive Blizzard wins for cars coming out of the GARC shop. The father-daughter battle between Donald Long and NASCAR trucks rookie Johanna Long never materialized. The pair did battle each other several times, but it was in the middle of the pack, never contesting for the lead at any point. Johanna Long finished ninth while her 48-year-old father finished 11th. “It feels really good to outrun one of my customers,” said Grill, [...]

Papa John’s Continues to Feed Five Flags Fans Hunger

Better ingredients. Better pizza. Paul Robinson hopes that translates into a better racing experience for Five Flags Speedway fans, especially for tonight’s Papa John’s 100, the second of five Blizzard Series races. The Papa John’s Pizza of Northwest Florida President, Robinson understands firsthand how passionate Five Flags loyalists can be. New with the company in 1995, Robinson was sent down from Louisville, Ky., to get a feel for Pensacola. One of the first places he went was Five Flags, spending a race night in the pits delivering pizzas. “I remember it like it was yesterday and the energy of the fans,” Robinson, 40, said. “I’m not a huge racing enthusiast. In fact, I had never been to a race before, but the energy of the people and the excitement leading up to race, what a great group of fans.” Those fans are loyal to Papa John’s, [...]

Papa John’s 100 Blizzard

Editor's Note: This story appeared in May 27 editions of the Pensacola News Journal. Chuck Corder It has been a bittersweet season for Bubba Pollard. No short-track racer across the southeast, arguably the nation, has enjoyed the season’s spoils more than the Senoia, Ga., driver. The Five Flags Speedway fan favorite has five wins, including the Blizzard Series season opener in March, and 12 top-five finishes in 16 starts this year. But Pollard also has dealt with incredible loss away from the track when longtime friend and fellow driver Beau Slocumb lost a courageous battle with cancer last month. Pollard has raced with a heavy heart since that fateful day in April. He honored Slocumb at last year’s Snowball Derby with a hunting-inspired, camouflage paint scheme. Pollard looks to honor his late buddy’s memory once again tonight against a deep field when the Blizzard Series returns [...]

Blizzard could be a Long Story

Today is Johanna Long’s 19th birthday. She had a short and simple request. And it wasn’t an iPad 2. All the reigning Snowball Derby champion and current NASCAR trucks series rookie asked for was for her 48-year-old father Donald Long to get back in a Super Late Model once again. Johanna Long’s wish will come true when the Blizzard Series returns with the Papa John’s 100 on Friday at Five Flags Speedway. “A few years ago he stopped racing to focus on my dream,” Johanna Long said. “It’ll be cool to race each other and for him to have a little fun.” Modifieds, Sportsmen and Bombers also will have a little fun when the gates open at 5 p.m. Friday. Admission to the grandstands are as follows: $15 Adults; $14 Seniors/Military; $12 Students; $5 Child (6-11); Under 6 is Free. Pit passes are $25. It’ll be the [...]

THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE!!

5 Flags Speedway has become known for many things, including fast and furious racing action, exciting young stars, the loyalist of race fans, and of course, The Snowball Derby. But there is something else. And if you are a school age child and your race vehicle has just 2 wheels and pedals, THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! One event stands above all others. It’s the Annual Kid’s Bike Races at 5 Flags Speedway, and it’s right around the corner, scheduled for June 10th in conjunction with Race #2 in the Allen Turner Series. There will be four age groups competing. Ages 3 thru 5 will drag race down the front straightaway, while ages 6 thru 9, 10 thru 12, and 13 and up will race an entire lap around the speedway. Each and every participant will receive a trophy and an ice cream. Sponsor’s once again for this year [...]

Okie A-OK After Two Wins on Wild Night

Chuck Corder From the four flags that waved to the fiery tempers, the color red seemed to be a fabric woven through Friday night’s action at Five Flags Speedway. Okie Mason preferred black and white. Okie was better than OK, taking home a pair of checkered flags Friday. Mason began his historic night by capturing the Pro Challenge exhibition race. More importantly, though, he outlasted nine cautions to win the Super Stocks 50-lap showdown. “The other cautions didn’t bother me until that last one,” said Mason, who won his first Super stocks feature in more than a decade. “I decided to go for it around Lap 31 and I thought that decision might come back to bite me.” Luck was clearly on his side Friday. Mason wasn’t going to compete last Friday when the 50 lapper originally was scheduled before rain postponed it to this [...]

Mercer Sets Sights

Editor's Note: This article first appeared in May 20 editions of the Pensacola News Journal. Chuck Corder Stevie Mercer thought he was done with racing last December. He had spent the better part of two decades as a fan favorite at Five Flags Speedway in one of Pensacola’s most recognizable racing families. Mercer figured he had driven off into the sunset after last year’s Snowball Derby. Then, he got a call New Year’s Eve. “Let’s build a new car,” the voice on the other end implored. The voice belonged to Mercer’s brother Eddie Mercer, 53 — the legendary Super Late Model driver and 2005 Derby champion. Leave it to big brother to pull Stevie Mercer back onto the racetrack. That’s where the 47 year old will be tonight when the Sportsman drivers return to Five Flags along with Super Stocks, Bombers and Pro Challenge cars. Tonight’s action is [...]
