Garvey Completes Hat Trick, Holds off Pollard for Third Allen Turner PLM Win of 2012

By Chuck Corder Mike Garvey looked like he was on a lazy, Sunday drive. Instead, his night quickly transformed into a Friday afternoon gridlock. Through all the ebbs and flows of the Allen Turner 100 on Friday at Five Flags Speedway, Garvey kept his No. 1 out front and captured his third Pro Late Model victory of 2012. Garvey watched his 7-plus second lead diminish when the first of three consecutive cautions came out at Lap 95. He was able to hold off Bubba Pollard on each restart and rocketed away. “You really have to be careful here to save something for the end,” said Garvey, who has a commanding series points lead thanks to three wins and a second in the four PLM races. “We were just riding around and then those cautions came out at the end.” Pollard was the night’s fast qualifier at 17.045 seconds, but started 10th after the invert. After biding his [...]

Youngster Hausler Credits Points Leader Garvey for Rookie’s Successful PLM Season

By Chuck Corder It’s hard to find a chair at Zachary Hausler’s lunch table every Monday at Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, Texas. Without fail, the 17-year-old junior always has the best stories of the weekend. Movies, schmovies. Malls, scmalls. As his classmates engulf their paper-bag meals, Hausler regales them with tales of trading paint with some of the south’s finest short-track drivers. He hopes he has a whopper after tonight when Hausler returns to Pensacola for his fourth Allen Turner Pro Late Model Series 100 lap race of the season at Five Flags Speedway. “They always ask what the feeling is like,” he said of his friends. “It’s unexplainable. You have to do it yourself to get the feeling of doing it all the time.” Sportsmen and Bombers will once again have that feeling when the gates open at 5 p.m. today. Admission to the grandstands is as follows: $15 Adults; $14 Seniors; $12 [...]

A Long-Lasting Love Affair, Bendele Seeks to Continue PLM Success at Five Flags this Friday

By Chuck Corder Brandon Bendele stood up his prom date. Instead of wheeling a mean-looking muscle car up to the girl’s house, a corsage sliding across the passenger’s seat, Bendele had a date with different sort of destiny. “I canceled on her,” Bendele recalled. “I was gonna race.” The then-16 year old chose his love for stock car over his love for girls. So prom night was memorable for Bendele because it marked his first career race. Now, 37, Bendele has zero regrets for that fateful decision, having parlayed his choice into a respected late model career. The Texas driver will once again be one of the dark horses when the Allen Turner Pro Late Model Series returns Friday to Five Flags Speedway for their fourth 100-lap race of the year. Sportsmen and Bombers round out the schedule when the gates open at 5 p.m. Friday. Admission to the grandstands is as follows: $15 Adults; $14 Seniors; [...]
