Snowball Derby Week Winners

By Chuck Corder OK, now Chase Elliott simply isn’t playing well with others. Even when he errs (or at least when he believes he errs) — Elliott still gets to stand on the doorframe of his No. 9 late model with a 1,000-watt smile and celebrate with a fist pump and a lengthy exhale. Those that continue to watch the young prince of Five Flags Speedway promenade his way around the famed half-mile oval so smoothly and effortlessly are running out of superlatives to describe Elliott’s accomplishments. The 18 year old from Dawsonville, Ga., and offspring of NASCAR icon “Million Dollar” Bill Elliott, rewrote the record books Friday with another Snowflake 100 victory. “I thought I made a mistake,” admitted the younger Elliott, who has yet to lose in his Pro Late Model ride this year. “I didn’t expect the race to go green as long as it did. Fortunately, we had enough tires [...]

Elliott Dynasty Overthrown with DQ, Jones Captures Back-to-Back Snowballs

By Chuck Corder The monarch has been sacked. It what was a virtual coronation Sunday of Chase Elliott’s growing kingdom of trophies in Victory Lane at Five Flags Speedway rose another power in the Tech Shed. A few short hours after Elliott had hoisted the Tom Dawson trophy for his second career Snowball Derby victory, he was stripped of the crown under technical inspection. Instead, Erik Jones went from settling for second to successfully defending his historic 2012 Snowball Derby win by capturing a second consecutive crown. Not surprisingly, Elliott had no comment to share about his feelings following the official ruling of “unapproved weight” to his No. 9 Super Late Model. “It was all a fair process,” Five Flags general manager Tim Bryant said. “There were no arguments from the Elliotts on that.” Elliott and crew chief Ricky Turner have been simpatico for the duration of the 18-year-old’s entire late model career. “It was an oversight [...]

Mingus Wins Snowball Last Chance Race

ARCA Series points runner up glad to make Derby Two weeks ago Mason Mingus felt fairly confident that his Super Late Model team would be in the Snowball Derby. He had a banner racing season with a second place ARCA points finish, a very solid third at the tough Winchester 400 and he was headed for a top ten finish at the All American 400 before getting caught in someone else’s crash. He’d had the fastest time in the Snowball Derby Practice Preview. So, all-in-all, there was reason for figuring he had a good chance of qualifying well for the 46th annual Snowball Derby. So, when the Brentwood, TN driver missed qualifying by a couple of spots, there was disappointment, but he knew he had a good car and a good team, so he was determined to have a good showing in the Last Chance race. And he did. Mingus dominated [...]

Former Derby Pole Sitter Gale, Veteran Rogers Highlight Final Four that Earn Snowball Spot

By Chuck Corder Going home from the Snowball Derby empty-handed is always the greatest fear for the first weekend in December. Going home after initially believing you had punched your ticket to the most prestigious race in the short-track world could scar you for life. At first blush, it appeared as though it would be Mason Mingus, Brady Boswell, David Rogers and Chris Wimmer would be the four lucky drivers advancing from Saturday afternoon’s last-chance Derby race into today’s main event at Five Flags Speedway. Track technical inspector Ricky Brooks would have the final say. His notorious strict “Room of Doom” was the undoing of Boswell and Wimmer. Both drivers were disqualified for carburetor issues, vaulting 2010 Derby pole sitter Cale Gale and Josh Hamner into the final two spots of today’s 46th running of the Snowball Derby. “We’ve been working really hard all weekend,” said Gale, who won a NASCAR Trucks Series race in [...]
