The sky grabbing 500 ft high new crane was shown to a list of VIP’s from the area Tuesday in the Speedway parking lot. It is owned by Deep South Cranes, and will be used on big jobs along the coast. Shown above is 5 Flags GM talking about it with Deep South Cranes owner Jimmy White Sr. The facilities at the speedway are available for similar events by corporations and organizations year round (except during the Snowball Derby).
5 Flags Speedway is undergoing some off season surface safety improvements. Areas of alligator cracking are being removed by a national contractor to minimize deterioration of the existing asphalt surface. Richard Goss of Louisville, KY is overseeing the maintenance operations. His company was here 3 years ago to grind off the top wearing surface, that resulted in faster times for competitors. This procedure is expected to last 6 weeks, and be completed by late February in time for the season opener on March 22nd, and a pre-season open practice on a date to be announced. The track was last resurfaced in 1973, and the seasoned surface is preferred by many drivers, saying it contributes to the character of the competition. It should be a safer, smoother, seasoned surface when completed. The contractor will work around the scheduled appearances of the Rusty Wallace Racing Experience, scheduled for 3 days in February.

The Ironman Award, given to the worker who goes above and beyond, was presented to Charlie and Waynetta Head, at the annual Awards Banquet on Saturday the 12th. They were lauded by track manager Tim Bryant for their tireless efforts during the season that contributed to making racers have a better experience at the track. Charlie performs various duties in the pits during the race including operating stop and go in turn 1. Waynetta is the first to greet drivers as they sign in for their wrist bands prior to entering the pits. Both have worked at the track for many years, Waynetta is the daughter of the late Wayne Niedecken, winner of the first Snowball Derby 45 years ago. The Rex Brooks Ironman award has been given for the past 8 years in memory of Brooks who devoted many extra hours to the speedway.
Sportsmen Champion Brannon Fowler of Molino was among the drivers who received trophies, a check and other prizes at the Annual Awards Banquet Saturday the 12th at the Pensacola Fairgrounds. Fowler, a champ at 5 Flags and Mobile International says he is ready for the season to start for 2013, and welcomes competing at both tracks. Drivers in the Bombers, Modifieds, Super Stock, and Pro Late Model divisions were also honored before a crowd of over 200.
The monster in the parking lot is the largest crane on wheels within 400 miles. Deep South Cranes of Pensacola just acquired the mammoth machine for contractors needing a big lift. It weighs a million pounds plus, takes 17 trucks to transport, and 2 days for a crew to assemble on a job site. It can lift 600 tons, that’s more than all the cars on the starting grid of the Snowball Derby, and can go 500 feet up. Yikes, that’s 50 stories. Jimmy White of DSC says the suggested name for the big rig is “The Beast”. It is on display for a few days at the track. Need anything big moved?
