CRASH AND FIRE DURING ALLEN TURNER HYUNDAI 100

The 2 drivers walked away...and were ok.  The #41 of Troy Grisaffi of Kenner LA ignited into 20+ foot flames after being hit by #52 car of Cody Karl of Gulfport, MS during the 100 lap season championship. Our track photographer Tom Wilsie captured the event in a sequence of over a dozen photos.  As the fire erupted, safety crews quickly arrived, and contained then extinguished the blaze.  Meanwhile the 2 drivers escaped injury...both walked away once out of the cars.  Grisaffi had to be helped out by safety officials, was examined in the ambulance and watched the rest of the race. The race was red flagged immediately, and resumed after about 30 minutes.

Elliott’s Return Proves Victorious in Allen Turner Tune Up 100; 14-Year-Old Jones among Five Track Champs Crowned

By Chuck Corder It’s not often that Chase Elliott gets dwarfed by the moment on a racetrack. Especially when the 17-year-old phenom winds up in Victory Lane. Elliott came home with the Allen Turner Tune Up 100 win Saturday at Five Flags Speedway, but it was Garrett Jones receiving all the attention. The 14-year-old West Palm Beach native, living now in North Carolina, celebrated the Allen Turner Pro Late Model track championship. His eighth-place finish, one spot better than Bryce Dulabhan, was good enough to capture the hardware by a single point over Dulabhan on the Whataburger Night of Champions. Johanna Long, in her first PLM race at Five Flags since last December, struggled mightily most of the night and finished a distant 23rd after being involved in a crash midway through the race. “We had a bad weekend, to be honest,” said Jones, who struggled in qualifying while Dulabhan took the pole with a [...]

Teenage Wonderland: With Big Names in Field, Jones, Dulabhan Poised to Race for Allen Turner PLM Championship on Saturday

By Chuck Corder It must feel like a swarm of butterflies has descended into the bellies of Garrett Jones and Bryce Dulabhan. The two teenagers — Jones, 14; Dulabhan, 17 — figured to have a pressure-packed evening of racing ahead of them this Saturday night at Five Flags Speedway. Separated by a ho-hum 12 points heading into the Whataburger Night of Champions, Jones and Dulabhan will likely determine the Allen Turner Pro Late Model series track championship at the end of the Tune Up 100 on Saturday. Needless to say, nerves were already going to be an issue. With the recent announcement that rising NASCAR stars Johanna Long and Chase Elliott would be in Saturday night’s field, one expects the young guns to be as nervous as a pair of long-tailed cats in a room full of rocking chairs. “It definitely blows my mind,” said Jones, an eighth grader who currently resides in North Carolina [...]

Buttrick, Fowler for All the Sportsman Marbles on Whataburger Night of Champions; Nelson will Enjoy Victory Lap for Bombers on Saturday

By Chuck Corder This was all supposed to be a mere formality. An afterthought. Steve Buttrick has won 10 — count ’em 10! — Beef “O” Brady’s Sportsman features this season and his second track title in four years seemed a virtual lock. That was before last Friday night. Buttrick and his familiar blue No. 33 were collected in an unfortunate incident late in the 25-lap feature, resulting in a costly “DNF” that figured to leave the Whataburger Night of Champions this Saturday at Five Flags Speedway shrouded in some mystery. But after some sleepless nights this week, the three-time defending Sportsman Snowball Derby king is confident his familiar blue No. 33 will be right in the mix come Saturday. “It’s looking good, but there was a lotta damage,” Buttrick said. “It was bent. But after working on it for five days, we’ve straightened it out pretty good.” Four other divisions — the Allen Turner Pro Late [...]

Howell, Stagner Look to Hold onto Slim Points Lead and Secure Track Championships on Saturday

By Chuck Corder It’s good to be king. But the effort, prudence and resolve that go into becoming king aren’t, at times, all that rewarding or glamorous. Brandon Howell certainly sounds like he’s ready to become the Modifieds king during the Whataburger Night of Champions on Saturday night at Five Flags Speedway. Howell enters the final night of the season nursing a slim, five-point lead over defending track champion Donnie Hamrac. But instead of being anxious about holding onto that rickety cushion, Howell is taking a fairly laissez faire approach. “I want a championship bad, don’t get me wrong,” the Lucedale, Miss., resident said. “But I’ve never been in this position before. We’ll just race, and do what we like to do. It ain’t gonna kill me if we don’t win one.” We’ll see whether or not Howell’s gameplan is just a disguise for apprehension Saturday. Either way a hotly-contested Mods title will be on the [...]
