The Must See Racing Winged Sprints love the high banks and half mile layout of 5 Flags Speedway, and are returning on April 11th. These speedsters with the wide top hat come South from Michigan and surrounding Northern states to thrill the Pensacola race fans. The Winged Warriors will be joined by the motorcycles, Bombers and Sportsmen.
Bubba Pollard, Brannon Fowler, and Oakie Mason would all call it a great weekend. Two racing events, and a sweep of both. Bubba Pollars took the 100 lap Allen Turner Pro Late Model season opener, with Anderson Bowen second, and Mike Garvey third. Brannon Fowler fresh from the win at Mobile the night before, outdrove Billy Hoover and Shanna Ard who finished 2nd and 3rd in the Beef O Brady Sportsmen. Oakie Mason, in the #10 Ingersoll Modified won the feature, followed by Chris Cotto and Joe Thornton. The Super Socks feature was taken by Todd Jones, followed by Randy Thompson and Bubba Winslow. The Bombers feature went to Jeff Goff, followed by Michael Nelson and Robert Balkum.
By Chuck Corder A gas station isn’t high on the list of places to purchase serendipity. But a few steps away from the bags of chips and honey-roasted peanuts, with a lottery ticket in hand, Bryce Dulabhan scratched off his destiny and scored himself a ride. That didn’t think to be a problem at the end of 2013. The 18-year-old Fairhope, Ala., native captured the Sunoco Gulf Coast Pro Late Model championship between Five Flags Speedway and Mobile International Speedway, and finished a single point shy of the Allen Turner PLM title last year in Pensacola. But because of some private family issues surrounding his old No. 28, Dulabhan will climb aboard a PLM in which he has zero seat time when the 2014 season kicks off Friday night at Pensacola’s high banks with a 100 lapper. Modifieds, Super Stocks and Sportsmen all begin their respective seasons with 25-lap features Friday while the Bombers [...]
By Chuck Corder Rare to find a teenager who knows exactly what he wants. Perhaps it’s even rarer when one reveals they’re not content to rest on their laurels and triumphs. Garrett Jones seems to be one of those anomalies. At 14, Jones is one of the more eager adolescents you’ll come across. He’s excited to start the 2014 season Friday at Five Flags Speedway and raring to begin defense of the Allen Turner Pro Late Model track title he won last year. But of all the goals Jones anticipates attaining, racking up wins ranks at the top of that list. “Winning a championship was great, but we didn’t win any races,” said the eighth grader from Mooresville, N.C., who took Pensacola’s high banks by storm in 2013. “We had a lotta consistent finishes, but eventually we have to start winning races. I can’t complain. We wanted do better, but we’re steadily improving every race.” It’ll be [...]
Garrett Jones is expected to be in the starting field of the ALLEN TURNER 100 Friday evening when the 2014 racing season begins. The Pro Late Model defending track champion is anxious to extend his successful record into a new year...but he faces some stiff competition. Bryce Dulabhan, and veterans Mike Garvey and Junior Niedecken are also focused on the 100 lap event. There is a long list of other PLM drivers who have the same goal, qualify well, run fast, stay out of trouble, and be first when the checkered flag comes out. Qualifying starts at 7pm, and the night of racing goes at 8. Here is the order of action: Modified Feature 25 laps Super Stock 25 laps Allen Turner 100 Pro Late Models 100 laps Sportsmen 25 laps Bombers 20 laps
