GRANT BLAZES INTO RACING HISTORY WITH 3rd STRAIGHT WIN OF NEW SEASON

University of South Alabama grad Grant Enfinger put the world of ARCA racing on notice.  I’m here to race and to win! Grant grabbed the win at Salem Speedway in the Menards ARCA event.  Spencer Gallagher was 2nd and veteran Frank Kimmel 3rd. You have to go back to 1970 for a hat trick on the ARCA season when Ramo Scott swept the first 3 in the season. Enfinger, from Fairhope, considers Mobile and Pensacola his home tracks.

Pollard Returns to Victory Lane at Five Flags, Captures Mountain Dew Kickstart 125

By Chuck Corder Bubba Pollard’s best friend in Pensacola should be a realtor. The Senoia, Ga., native comes to race at Five Flags Speedway about a dozen times a year. And those trips usually end in one way: A Pollard victory. The Mountain Dew Kickstart 125 followed a similar script Friday in a 27-car Super Late Model field at the famed half-mile asphalt oval. Pollard sat on the pole and collected the Southern Super Series/Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard Series season opener title Friday. It was Pollard’s second straight Super Late Model win at Pensacola’s high banks dating back to the season finale last September. “We had a really good racecar,” he said. “I didn’t know what to expect, but it held up pretty good. It’s tough. These guys have gotten a lot better.” One of Pollard’s biggest threats Friday figured to be Pensacola’s Johanna Long. The 2010 Snowball Derby champion, Long qualified well in her [...]

Johanna’s Sprits Remain High as She Slides into Carlson’s No. 21 for the Blizzard Series Opener

By Chuck Corder At 21, did you know what you wanted out of life? And, no, neither your preferred cocktail nor your favorite flavor of Ramen noodles count as career choices. Johanna Long has been 21 for 11 months. She knows exactly what she wants. “Right now, it’s all about being at the racetrack and being seen,” said the Pensacola native, who won the 2010 Snowball Derby before leaping into the NASCAR ranks. “It’s also about driving whatever I can get in to keep fresh.” Long will be sharpening her skills Friday — and perhaps for most of 2014 — at Five Flags Speedway for the Mountain Dew Kickstart 125. She’ll be behind the wheel of Scott Carlson’s No. 21 Anderson Subaru Super Late Model at the Buddy's Home Furnishings Blizzard Series opener, which marks the third Southern Super Series race of the young season. “It’s going to be great to have her in the [...]

Atop Butler U-Pull-It Bombers Standings, Goff Jr. Hopes Hot Start Continues to Smolder on Friday at Five Flags

By Chuck Corder Pin him down a few years ago, and Jerry Goff Jr. would've likely told you racing wasn't in his cards. Hard to believe given the fact the 23-year-old Lucedale, Miss., product has taken the Butler U-Pull-It Bombers division by storm this season at Five Flags Speedway. Goff won the first feature of the season last month and found himself again on the podium with a third-place finish two Fridays ago at Pensacola’s high banks. “Because of the way we started, it’s almost like we control our own destiny,” Goff said. “At the same time, though, that can all change in one weekend. A blown tire, engine failure — as close as the points are right now, it’s not unlikely that won’t happen and somebody can take us over. Guys over there in Pensacola are competitive.” He’ll look to pad his slim, four-point lead this Friday when the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard [...]

Fresh Off First Southern Super Series Win, OKC’s Wilson Eyes Breakthrough Victory in Blizzard Series Opener on Friday

By Chuck Corder He loves Five Flags Speedway. He loves it not. Some 800 miles away, just outside of Oklahoma City, Okla., Donnie Wilson tells you through his cell phone that Five Flags is his favorite asphalt to race on. Perhaps distance makes the heart grow fonder. In the 15-plus years the 43-year-old late model driver has come to Pensacola, he remains in search for his first win. But on the heels of a milestone victory last month, Wilson is riding a wave of momentum into Friday’s Mountain Dew Kickstart 125, the third or 16 races on the Southern Super Series slate. He’s hopeful that slump is nearing its end. “Led a lotta laps down there; it just ain't happened yet,” Wilson said. “Pensacola, you never know what you’re going to get. You could have the same stuff every time, and get a different result every time.” He’ll join a blockbuster Super Late Model lineup for the [...]

Anderson Bowen Ready to Mix it Up with the Best at the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown
