Defending SSS Champion Scores First Series Win of 2014 Story Courtesy of Speed 51 PENSACOLA, FLORIDA) - Daniel Hemric had been knocking on the door to victory lane during the 2014 season on the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco. Friday night, he busted down the door and earned his first series victory of the season. After leading the most laps at Gresham in the most recent race only to come up short of victory lane, Hemric rebounded to take the lead two laps short of the lap 75 break and never looked back to pick up the victory in the Papa John's 125 at Pensacola, Florida's Five Flags Speedway Friday night. "I was trying to run a consistent pace tonight," said Hemric. "I think a lot of people doubted us in the series this year because we couldn't finish a race off. We had led at the break a few times and [...]
By Chuck Corder The champ’s still standing. After taking his fair share of body blows in the first two Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard Series 125 lappers, Daniel Hemric counterpunched Friday night at Five Flags Speedway. The 23 year old, who captured the Super Late Model track title in 2013, slammed the throttle down for the final 52 laps of the Papa John’s 125 on Friday. Hemric punctuated the long-overdue win with his trademark backflip off the driver’s side window frame. Pensacola’s Johanna Long was 13th. “It’s an honor to even get to drive a racecar for a living,” said Hemric, who makes his home in the NASCAR heartland of Kannapolis, N.C. “I feel confident we’re getting our stuff better and better.” No time like the present. It wasn’t like Hemric was enduring a disappointing season. He boasts four late model wins in another series and a slew of victories in his Legends cars, one of Hemric’s [...]
Georgia Driver Leads Standings Again For the third time in 2014, the stars of the Southern Super Series presented by Sunoco will take to the half-mile Five Flags Speedway (FL) to begin the next to last gulf coast weekend of the year this Friday night. For what seems like the first time this year, the driver they will all be gunning for is not four-time series winner Bubba Pollard, but a worthy adversary and current SSS points leader and most recent winner, Anderson Bowen. Although elated after winning in front of his hometown crowd at Gresham Motorsports Park (GA), Bowen would like nothing more than to continue his hot streak in the gulf region, so much so, that the team rearranged their entire racing schedule so the 17-year-old can make a run at the title. “We moved our schedule around between ARCA and K&N to be able to do this series full-time now. [...]
By Chuck Corder Dave Mader III had been lying in the weeds the last few years. That’s hard to do when you share an honor with the likes of Sprint Cup star Jimmie Johnson, as a NASCAR series champion for four years in a row or longer in Johnson’s case. Mader’s 2012 season went up in smoke because of health issues. But once 2013 rolled around, the 1978 Snowball Derby champion was gradually getting comfortable in the seat. A feature here, a feature there and the signs were clear that Mader was getting his asphalt legs underneath him once again. In 2014, it’s like he never abandoned the wheel. Mader owns Super Stock victories this season at both Five Flags Speedway and Mobile International Speedway. A Faith Chapel Super Stocks feature win last month in Pensacola was all the alarm Mader’s adoring fans needed to champion his return. “It feels as good as it always [...]
After a 5-year absence from the track, Trooper Tim will be back in the #07 Sportsman car this Friday. Most noted for his front-stretch crash during the 2009 Snowball Derby, Trooper Tim has been playing on dirt in a Vintage-class car. "I'm incredibly excited about being back with my asphalt family for the night. It's been a few years, but Jim Pokrant is turning a bad situation into a better situation and letting me pilot his car while he sits this week out."
PENSACOLA, FL. (July 18th, 2014)— In the third race of the 2014 Pro Late Model season at 5 Flags Speedway, Team Flyin Ryan Luza Racing arrived with heavy hearts. Flyin Ryan had recently lost his Paw Paw just two short weeks previously from an illness. Ryan’s Paw Paw was one of his biggest supporters through out his racing career. Ryan and the entire Flyin Ryan Race Team will be dedicating the rest of the season to him. Even with all of that on his mind Ryan finished with a solid race that provided momentum and excitement for the upcoming August 22nd race. “We did some things really well but we recognize that there are still areas that we need to work on if we’re going to compete with and out run the many well established teams in this sport.” said John Luza Jr. We have the makings of a great [...]
By Chuck Corder Steve Meyer turns 47 years young in a few months. A few months after that, Five Flags Speedway will celebrate the 47th annual Snowball Derby. Want to take a guess on how many of short-track Holy Grail races Meyer has missed? Zero, zilch, nada. Meyer is one of a handful of Five Flags’ faithful fanatics that can boast seeing every Snowball from its first two-time winner Wayne Niedecken Sr. (1968, 1970) to its most recent and reigning two-time champion, Erik Jones (2012-13) — even if his memory is a little fuzzy on those early races. “That first one, I was in diapers,” Meyer remembered. “My dad took my brother and me out there. Mom went to some type of Tupperware convention, I think. We thought every race was going to be like the Snowball Derby.” All of his history and knowledge makes Meyer somewhat of an authority, an expert witness if you [...]
