Garvey Captures Allen Turner Tune-Up 100; Long Holds off Jones, Crowned One of Five Track Champions

By Chuck Corder All eyes were locked onto the leaders. It just so happened, the attention was being paid to two Pro Late Model cars that had no shot at the Allen Turner Tune-Up 100 win at the Whataburger Night of Champions on Saturday at Five Flags Speedway. Johanna Long nursed a slim points lead all night long with defending track champion Garrett Jones trying desperately to finish three spots ahead of the Pensacola she-ro to claim back-to-back titles. But when the checkered flag finally flew, Jones’ fifth-place finish was only two positions better than Long’s seventh. Mike Garvey ran a dominant second half to top the 25-car field, but Long captured her second PLM track title of her career by three points over the 15-year-old Jones. “This means a lot to me,” said Long, the 2010 Snowball Derby champion and former NASCAR Nationwide Series driver who won a PLM track title in 2008. “The guys [...]

Waltrip, Alexander Praise the Noble Nature of Good Friend as He Battles Form of ALS

By Chuck Corder Some measure a man’s character by his passion. Some measure a man’s character by the selfless deeds he performs when few are staring. In these “selfie” days that tug on pop culture, finding folks that grasp true sacrifice is a hard task. Until you encounter Sherman Chunn. The 63 year old from Franklin, Tenn., remains that anomaly today. Describing Chunn is an easy task. Fan. Car owner. Fabricator. And, most importantly, a helping hand for any team in the pits. Simply put, he’s a racing lifer. “We used to not have 20 people per car like they do today,” said short-track legend Mike Alexander, a longtime pal of Chunn’s. “Sherman liked doing the fabricating, the duct work, the wiring — mostly, all of it. He was very good at fabricating.” From his close-knit friendship with Alexander — born when the pair was teenagers working at a car dealership owned by Alexander’s father — to [...]

It’s Long and Jones for the Allen Turner Pro Late Model Championship at the Tune-Up 100 on Saturday

By Chuck Corder There was history between Johanna Long and Garrett Jones long before the Pro Late Model season began at Five Flags Speedway. As residents of Mooresville, N.C., the transplanted Floridians — Long from Pensacola, obviously; Jones from West Palm Beach — found themselves at the same entertainment center racing go-karts against one another. “We had a blast,” the 15-year-old Jones remembered. “She dove off in there one time and gave me the ol’ bump and run. I thought that was pretty cool.” Will history repeat itself at the Whataburger Night of Champions when the two battle it out for one of five track titles that will be handed out Saturday? Long, the 2010 Snowball Derby champion and former NASCAR Nationwide Series driver, holds a slim, four-point lead in the Allen Turner PLM standings over Jones, the defending PLM track champion. The Allen Turner Tune-Up 100 is the regular season finale Saturday, and it’s [...]

Mason Looks to Go Two-for-Two with 5 Flags Track Championships; Ard, Balkum Hope to Secure First Career Titles

By Chuck Corder When he adds it all up, Okie Mason figures he has been coming to Five Flags Speedway for more than 30 years. At 52, the Eight Mile, Ala., native is just a few years older than the Snowball Derby itself, which will celebrate its 47th annual edition in December. In all that time, Mason has won a lot of feature races. Even won the Super Stocks version of the Snowball last December for his first career Derby trophy. But never has he won a track championship at the famed half-mile asphalt oval. That will certainly all change at this Saturday’s Night of Champions when the Allen Turner Pro Late Models, Pro Trucks, Home Depot Modifieds, Beef “O” Brady’s Sportsmen and Butler U-Pull-It Bombers take to Pensacola high banks where track winners in all five divisions will be crowned. “I guess who could say it’d be storybook,” said Mason, who will win the [...]

POLLARD CAPTURES SUNOCO SOUTHERN SUPER SERIES

Story by Speed51,com One year ago, Bubba Pollard came up just one point short of winning the Southern Super Series championship.  This year, the Senoia, Georgia driver wasn't about to let his first SSS title slip away again. Pollard used a consistent Gulf Coast weekend consisting of two fourth-place finishes here at Five Flags Speedway and Mobile International Speedway on his way to being crowned the 2014 Southern Super Series champion. In addition to the SSS championship, his pair of top-five finishes also crowned him 2014 Blizzard Series (Five Flags Super Late Model), Miller Lite Series (Mobile Super Late Model), and Gulf Coast Series (Five Flags and Mobile combined) champion.  Polllard's Blizzard Series championship is his second-straight and makes him the first repeat champion of the series in nine seasons. "We had a good season all and all," said Pollard.  "We came out of the box pretty strong and really had some good [...]
