After Hoisting a Pro Truck Crown, Jorgensen Eager to Make PLM Debut at Five Flags in Allen Turner Series

By Chuck Corder Taylor Jorgensen had to wing it. She was at Five Flags Speedway’s awards banquet back in early January, and the Georgia driver was uncharacteristically unprepared. Like all the other track champions. Jorgensen was expected to give an acceptance speech and hers was one many attentive ears wanted to hear after she took Five Flags Speedway by storm last year. In her debut season in a full-bodied vehicle, the Legends car wunderkind won three Pro Truck features en route to her Pro Trucks track championship. “I talked about how blessed I was for an incredible season,” Jorgensen said, “and how my plans for this year were still up in the air, but that I wanted to come back to Five Flags Speedway and continue to showcase my talents. It was a speech from the heart, and wasn’t written down.” Little did she know that as she spoke her humble words that she had [...]

Allen Turner PLM Series: Riding Impressive Start to Season, Mobile’s Paul on Cusp of Breakthrough at 5 Flags

By Chuck Corder Unwrapping presents around the Christmas tree are the stuff childhood memories are made of. No matter if you celebrated with family at home or traveled for the holidays, whether the dwelling had a chimney or not, somehow Santa always found you. For west Mobile late model driver Ryan Paul, most of his Christmases as a kid and well into his adolescence were spent at stock car racing’s version of the North Pole. “Every year, we’d be driving to Daytona Beach,” Paul fondly recalled, traveling with his father, Willie, for the start of each go-kart racing season. “There were races all week with anywhere from 2,800 to 3,500 entries every year.” Ryan Paul, 32, won’t have to go through nearly as many drivers Friday night at Five Flags Speedway when the Allen Turner Pro Late Model series returns for its second 100 lap race of the season. The Faith Chapel Outlaw Stocks, The [...]

Kids Steal Show in Bike Races; Ruble On Top of Modifieds of Mayhem in Season’s Most Thrilling Race

By Chuck Corder The beginning was a harbinger for things to come for Korey Ruble. The 32-year-old driver from Headland, Ala., just north of Dothan, made a daring pass to get to third on the opening lap of Friday’s Modifieds of Mayhem 50-lap feature at Five Flags Speedway. Ruble earned that position and then put in yeoman’s work to stalk then-leader Jeff Letson for nearly 20 laps. Ruble, who won the Modifieds Snowball Derby last December, finally got around Letson on Lap 36 and pulled away from the 13-car field to earn his first Modifieds win of the season at Pensacola’s high banks. Texans Bayley Currey and Joe Aramendia finished second and third, respectively. “That was a heckuva race,” Ruble said. “Jeff Letson is a heckuva racecar driver. He raced me clean, but hard. He was doing things you gotta do to win. When (Currey) came up so hard, I didn’t know what he had. [...]

Holmes Chomping at Bit, Looking for Breakthrough Victory in Pro Trucks 30 Lapper on Friday

By Chuck Corder For so many years, Clint Holmes found little delight in going to Five Flags Speedway or any other racetrack, for that matter. An engine builder in a previous life, racetracks often meant work all over and no play for Holmes. And, the collateral damage of racing drivers who you’re building engines for. “Competing against your customers is not the best idea,” Holmes readily admits. But after the Pensacola native, who turned 42 earlier this week on Monday, closed the machine shop in 2014 he found a better reason than work to head to the track. Holmes was in the shop of Greg Janes, who builds and helps with many local cars that race at Five Flags, and feasted his eyes upon Shanna Ard’s Pro Trucks truck. “I loved the look of it,” said Holmes, who owns and operates Clint Holmes Automotive, a used car dealership at the corner of Nine Mile and [...]
