Snowball Derby “King” Bickle Heading Back for 50th Running

September 28, 2017 • App, Archives, Late Models, Region - Midwest, Region - Southeast, Top Stories Rich Bickle is the most decorated driver in the history of the Snowball Derby. Bickle leads all drivers with five career wins in the “granddaddy of all short track races,” but he hasn’t been back to Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida since he finished second in 2002. Now, for the 50th Annual Snowball Derby, the “Snowball Derby King” is headed back to Pensacola in search of his sixth Tom Dawson Trophy. During the 1990’s, no driver was more dominant at the historic Florida half-mile than Bickle. In addition to his five victories (1990, 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999), Bickle had an average finish of 8.4. His lowest finish was 36th in 1992, but that was due to an engine failure. Even the first year Bickle went to Pensacola in 1989 he almost won the race. He [...]

Night of Champions: Pollard Wins 3rd Blizzard Tile, While Nasse Celebrates SSS Crown; Roderick Sweeps Way to PLM Crown

By Chuck Corder Every great team, every great athlete clings to the importance of peaking. You want to be at your best when the moment matters most. Record books are littered with successful teams that got off to hot starts only to choke down the stretch. Sports have just as many, if not more, horror stories of draft busts or superstars that failed to reach their hype. Bubba Pollard and his No 26 Super Late Model team are neither of the above and seem to be peaking at the right time. The 30-year-old Georgian not only handily won the Deep South Cranes 125 on the Night of Champions on Saturday night at Five Flags Speedway, but also captured his third career Deep South Cranes Blizzard Series track championship in the process. “It’s all about working hard with this good group of guys,” Pollard said. “I’m real lucky I got great people behind me. Even [...]

Roderick and Pollard Prepare to Hoist Night of Champions’ Hardware, Keep Close Eye on Derby Preparations

By Chuck Corder Picture it: Gridlock in Atlanta. Bumper-to-bumper traffic, “Spaghetti Junction,” the whole nine. Got that frustrating, irritable mental image emblazoned in your brain? Now, imagine navigating the notoriously congested I-85 and I-285 beltway with an extraordinarily heavy foot of Casey Roderick, one of the nation’s top late model drivers. “What gets old is all the traffic,” said Roderick, whose 15 wins this season include all three Allen Turner Pro Late Model 100 lappers run this season at Five Flags Speedway. “I sit in traffic more than actual driving time. No traffic, I can make it in 45 minutes.” Instead, it’s typically a 90-minute daily stretch for the Lawrenceville, Ga., native on his way to Fayetteville. Fayetteville Ga. Home to one Ronnie Sanders. Owner and crew chief of the famed red No. 18 late model program that Roderick has guided so deftly this season. The team returns to the famed half-mile asphalt oval Saturday night [...]

Even With Little Hanging in Balance, Championship Races Deliver Dramatic Conclusions

By Chuck Corder In May, on the night of his first win of the season at Five Flags Speedway, Gary Sutton celebrated in Victory Lane by calling his No 151 Outlaw Stocks car an “ugly monstrosity.” Not as a slight, mind you. Sutton and his team, led by good friend Mike Williamson’s expert hands, had cut the car in half at one point in attempts to make the proper adjustments. Four months later, from the looks of it, little has changed to that monstrosity moniker. Sutton and his team ripped off the hood during Saturday’s 50-lap Faith Chapel Outlaw Stocks championship finale at Five Flags, keeping their eye on the ultimate prize, so that they could remain in the feature. Instead of parking the No, 151 for the night, Sutton recovered and maintained his points lead against Bubba Winslow to secure the inaugural Outlaw Stocks track championship at the famed half-mile asphalt oval. “We missed the first race of [...]

Local Classes Set to Crown Track Champions at Five Flags; Fowler Makes Quest for No. 5 Family Affair

By Chuck Corder Brannon Fowler has left nothing to chance. With only Saturday’s championship finale left, the 37-year-old Molino already has locked up his fifth career The Dock on Pensacola Beach Sportsmen crown thanks to one of the more dominant seasons in recent memory. The 30-lap Sportsman feature Saturday will be a victory ride to Victory Lane for Fowler and will be one of four local classes to crown Five Flags Speedway track champions. Fowler has a lot of people to thank from his many sponsors to his grassroots team that consists of dad Glenn, friend Rob Pollard, girlfriend Tiffany and an eager eight-year-old. Collin Fowler’s presence in his dad’s shop has been both heartwarming and, truthfully, invaluable. “He’s way beyond his years for eight years old. Definitely way ahead of dad and PawPaw,” Brannon Fowler admitted. “He takes it all in, and doesn’t forget. Any task you ask him to do — getting the [...]
