Many ups and many downs were featured as teams readied for the 50th Annual Snowball Derby weekend. Bubba Tops Both Overall Charts Each day of each year in Pensacola, Bubba Pollard has experienced mixed fortunes and emotions at the Snowball Derby. 2017 though was probably the most relaxed and composed he has been, based on one interesting factor. “Man, I’ve never talked to Speed51 so many times in one day in my life,” Pollard commented to Speed51.com powered by JEGS following the six hours of time Late Models were on the [...]

Sauter Crashes Hard in First Snowball Derby Practice

Wisconsin’s Johnny Sauter came into the 50th Annual Snowball Derby weekend as one of the favorites, even though it’s his first attempt in the prestigious event. Unfortunately, before Thursday practice reached lunch break, his team was forced to pack things up following multiple on-track issues that culminated with a hard crash in turn four. Only 15 minutes into the session, the 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion had an oil line come loose, setting off a trail of smoke and fluid with even a fire briefly igniting under the hood as his Super Late Model limped to the pits. The perimeter of the engine compartment was melted and burned, but after some repairs and analysis the green No. 5 machine quickly made its way back on the Five Flags Speedway surface. Then, a few short laps later, trouble struck in a more impactful way. “Prior proper planning prevents piss poor performance,” [...]

50 for 50: Wayne Puts Anderson Family in Derby Record Books

Second-generation drivers tend to run well at the Snowball Derby. Steve Wallace took home a victory after his dad tried for several years. Johanna Long did the same in 2010 when she won the race that her dad couldn’t win for so many years. Chase Elliott won it twice after his dad Bill tried and failed to win twice at Five Flags Speedway. Before all of those families, there was the Anderson family. First came Dick Anderson and then his son Wayne. Both have a history of success all around the south, especially in Florida, winning at nearly every stop along the way. When it comes to the Derby, it was Dick’s bad luck and his son’s fortune that got the family their own Tom Dawson trophy. “My dad (Dick) had them covered one year back in 1979,” Wayne Anderson said. “They never had radios back in those days so it was [...]

DRAW SETS LINEUP FOR SNOWBALL DERBY QUALIFYING NIGHT

While the most intense qualifying session in Super Late Model racing is two days away, the lineup has been set for Snowball Derby qualifying following the draw at Five Flags Speedway (FL) Wednesday night. The qualifying draw for the Snowball Derby and the Snowflake 100 closed out hauler parking and technical inspection day. Hometown driver Jeremy Pate drew the number one spot in Snowball Derby qualifying, while defending race champion Christian Eckes will be the last car to take the track during the qualifying session Friday evening. While the qualifying order will be subject to dissection and analysis as fans place their bets on which driver will lead the field to the green flag for the 50th Snowball Derby, two drivers on both ends of the running order agreed that ultimately the cream will rise to the top. Bubba Pollard drew one of the later positions in the lineup in both races, [...]

Alabama’s Loper Becomes 2x winner with Pure Stock 50-Lap Victory on Opening Night of 50th Annual Snowball Derby

By Chuck Corder In need of investment advice? Robert Loper is your guy. Instead of spending $150 for a new nosepiece, Loper and his team sealed the edge of the No. 15’s hood with long, thick swaths of orange duct tape. They spent their money wisely in other areas, hoping to get the Irvington, Ala., driver back to Victory Lane at the 50th annual Snowball Derby. The decision paid off, to say the least. Loper got his second career 50-lap Lloyd's Glass Pure Stocks Derby win, kicking off the Derby’s golden anniversary in grand fashion Wednesday night at Five Flags Speedway. “This means a whole lot to me,” said a soggy Loper, doused in a post-race celebration with a few adult beverages by his team following his burnout down the front stretch. “I had a lotta people close to me pass away this year. There were a lotta hard times this season. This makes it worth [...]

Smooth Sailing for Most During Snowball Derby Tech Day

While no Late Models took to the track at Five Flags Speedway on Wednesday, it was still a critical morning and afternoon on the first official day of the 50th Annual Snowball Derby. Following the load-in of over 100 haulers to the speedway grounds, the line for technical inspection opened for the first time this week. And for most, it was smooth sailing. After all Super and Pro Late Models went through for the first time, the news was good for most teams, with non-conforming cars being only slightly out of the box with body issues. This was the case for some of the contenders; however, by the close of inspection most cars had made it through the tech area for a second look-over. Not only did all cars get through with no major violations, with only a few being required to return on Thursday, but they made their way through [...]

Plott Brothers Ready to Tackle 50th Annual Snowball Derby

The Snowball Derby has long been a race that has brought families together for a week at Five Flags Speedway (FL). For 2017, the list of families includes the Plott family, with brothers Kason and Kyle Plott both searching for success in the 50th Annual Snowball Derby. While Kyle has competed in the Snowball Derby on three previous occasions, younger brother Kason will be making his debut this weekend. So far, the 2017 season has been an important one for Kyle as he completed his first full-time campaign with the Southern Super Series. This week, he looks to take a great learning season and turn it into a career-best finish at the Snowball Derby, where he had a top-five qualifying effort in 2016. “We’re excited to be here.” Kyle stated. “Hopefully we’ll have a little more luck than last year and make more than 67 laps. It’s been kind of a rollercoaster [...]

Youth Movement Continues at 50th Annual Snowball Derby

For the much of the current decade, youth has ruled the ranks at the Snowball Derby. It all started back in 2011 when Chase Elliot turned the short track world upside down, winning the Derby at Age 16. Since then, Erik Jones, John Hunter Nemechek, and Christian Eckes have all joined the ranks as fresh young Derby winners at 17 or under. Once again in 2017, another talented youth movement heads to Five Flags Speedway, looking to prove their metal against one of the most impressive group of veterans that the Derby has ever seen. Leading the movement into the 50th Snowball Derby is the young man who won it last year. Christian Eckes comes in at a still very youthful Age 17, looking to pull off the same feat that Erik Jones pulled off when he was 16 and 17. Eckes’ Fury Race Cars teammate Harrison Burton is fresh off his [...]
