It was their Night to Shine...and they did! Brian Weimer, from Georgia, who won a track championship in Pro Trucks a few years back without ever finishing first in a feature race grabbed his first place trophy Friday evening. Pure Stock driver Matt Johnson from Mobile made his first trip to the winners podium in a special 8 lap contest of drivers in his division who have never won.
Roderick Masters 5 Flags Again, Defending Champ Wins Fifth Straight Allen Turner PLM 100 Lapper By Chuck Corder The million-watt smile said it all. Casey Roderick’s words echoed the sense of relief plastered across his face. Victory Lane was a familiar place for the 25-year-old Georgian last year, both at Five Flags Speedway where he was the Allen Turner Pro Late Model track champion and across the country. Experiencing slumps are never fun, and when they trudge on for six months they were downright unbearable for the defending champ. Roderick ended his winless drought Friday night in dominant fashion, torching the 18-car field in the 100-lap season opener for the Allen Turner PLMs. “It feels really good to be back,” he said. “I don’t wish bad luck on anybody. I had one of those cars tonight you dream to have every week.” That Roderick broke out of his skid at the famed half-mile asphalt oval should not [...]
Rebirth: Toddler Son, Family Fueling Boyett’s Passion as LM Veteran turns Pro Trucks Rookie By Chuck Corder Logan Boyett is cherishing as many memories as he can these days. One of the most meaningful came in December during Snowball Derby week at Five Flags Speedway. A Pro Trucks rookie, Boyett got behind the wheel in the class’ Derby running and came home third. Not only was the 28-year-old Pensacola driver thrilled to finish on the podium, but Boyett just melted when he got out the truck and saw the unbridled joy beaming from the face of his 3-year-old son LJ. “You could just tell he was proud, even if he didn’t have a full grasp of what was going on,” Boyett said. And when Boyett captured his first Wholesale Controls International Pro Trucks victory at the season opener earlier this month, how did young LJ react? “Honestly, he was asleep,” LJ’s amused father said. “He had [...]

Six Feature Races Yields Six Different Winners Five Flags Rings in Opening Day in Style By Chuck Corder From the outhouse to the penthouse. That’s where Pace driver Todd Jones found himself Sunday afternoon at Five Flags Speedway. The racing gods shined brightly on Jones while Mother Nature delivered a picturesque Pensacola afternoon for the famed half-mile asphalt oval’s Opening Day. Jones won the second of two 25-lap Faith Chapel Outlaw Stocks feature, not only after starting from the back of the field but after his No. 4 yellow machine inexplicably lost power. Defending Outlaw Stocks Snowball Derby champion Bubba Winslow finished runner-up to Jones, but began his 2018 season by winning the 25 lapper. “We won the second one, and that’s all that matters,” said Jones, a past track champion at Five Flags when he won the Super Stocks title in 2014. “In the first (feature Sunday), we were trying to go to the front [...]
