In just a matter of months, the 18-year-old will climb behind the wheel of a Kyle Busch Motorsports truck and compete full-time in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series. Before that, though, the son of NASCAR legend and current NASCAR on NBC analyst Jeff Burton wants to add short-track racing’s most coveted piece of hardware to his trophy case. Harrison Burton took a giant leap toward that goal when he won the pole for the 51st annual Snowball Derby on Sunday at Five Flags Speedway. Burton set the fast time during Derby qualifying on Friday with a blistering time of 16.273 seconds, [...]
Derby Day 2: Pate Perseveres to Outlaw Stocks Title; Ard Keeps Local Streak Alive with Sportsmen Crown By Chuck Corder Jeremy Pate never pictured this moment two years ago. Who could’ve though? When a freak, on-the-job accident nearly severed his right arm in 2016, Pate’s fate in racing looked bleak, to say the least. “I got in a real low spot,” said the 41-year-old Pensacola driver, who in his mid-20s sat on the pole at the 2002 edition of the Snowball Derby. “Getting off the pain medications, that was hard. I didn’t know what the future held for me. But at the end of the day, this is what I love to do.” Pate’s passion for racing carried him from a valley of misery to his sport’s highest peak Thursday night at Five Flags Speedway and the 51st edition of the Snowball Derby, short-track racing’s most prestigious week. Pate won the 50-lap Faith Chapel Outlaw Stocks [...]

Burkett won twice and had 11 other top-five finishes in 13 races to finish second in the point standings to eventual track champion Robert Balkum. Nothing compared to Wednesday night, though. Nothing will ever compare. On Opening Night of the 51st annual Snowball Derby, short-track racing’s pinnacle week, the 17-year-old Burkett won the Lloyd’s Glass Pure Stocks Snowball Derby. His milestone victory came 19 years after Wayne Burkett, Caleb’s dad, won the same race. “We’re gonna party all weekend long,” Burkett said. “We won the Derby and the bounty (on Balkum) earlier in [...]

For Super Late Model racers, the most intense and nerve-racking moment of the short track racing season is Snowball Derby qualifying night. One year ago, Preston Peltier and his Generator Source team made it look easy by capturing the pole for the 50th Annual Snowball Derby. One year later, the team is heading back to Five Flags Speedway and hoping to win “both races.” “There are two races during Derby Week, the race for qualifying and the Derby itself. You’re so nervous for qualifying, it’s insane how much pressure and preparation is put into qualifying,” Peltier told Speed51.com. “I feel like everybody gets nervous on Friday night, including the fans watching.” The Fort Collins, Colorado driver debuted a brand new Hamke chassis last year at the Derby, since that race the car has put together an impressive six race resume including three wins at the Summer Showdown, Easter Bunny 150 and [...]

Boyett, who also received an opportunity to drive a Pro Truck last year, drove the race with one arm as the truck wouldn’t stay in fourth gear. “I [...]
