Nashville kid makes the snowflake field on time.

A very under funded team and driver Kyle Ivey made this year's snowflake on time compared to last year losing in the final chance race. Kyle Ivey of Woodbine, TN qualified 12 for this year's snowflake. He was involved in a wreck went to the back and finished 11 this year. When he has enough funds to race his equipment he always sprises his hometown crowd and we're proud of him.

Buttrick Has Developed a Niche for Winning at Snowball Derby

December 1, 2015 • App, Archives, Other Cars, Snowball Derby, Top Stories The Snowball Derby is not just about the Super Late Models.  It’s also the Snowball Derby for all the local classes, and there are many stories to tell.  One is that of Steve Buttrick the standout in the Beef O’Brady’s Sportsman division.  He finished fourth in points during the 2015 season, but as a four-time winner of the biggest race of the year he’s developed a niche for coming up big at the Snowball Derby. “It doesn’t matter what class you’re in,” said Buttrick.   “This is the biggest race of the year.  This is our Snowball Derby.  I didn’t start racing till I was 50 so I don’t have plans to move up and run other classes.  This is my hobby and the wins I have had have been special. ”   Buttrick was going for an unheard of fifth-straight win [...]

Luza Looks to Clinch Allen Turner PLM Track Championship in Style at Tune-Up 100 Saturday Night

Luza Looks to Clinch Allen Turner PLM Track Championship in Style at Tune-Up 100 Saturday Night       By Chuck Corder   In some ways, Ryan Luza is the envy of many.   The 19-year-old Texan, a budding late model star, wheels racecars. Luza sits a qualifying lap away from putting a bow on the Allen Turner Pro Late Model track championship at Five Flags Speedway.   In other ways, many wouldn’t trade places with Luza if their lives depended upon it. Starting his third semester of college, near his Houston-suburb home of Cypress, Texas, Luza carries a full plate of courses. One of those is a 2½-hour calculus class.   While fans and some drivers might get queasy at the mere mention of formulas and slopes and curves and rates of change, even math revs Luza’s engine.   “I wish all my classes could be math,” he said. “That’s my strong suit.”   Don’t be mistaken, though. Racing takes a backseat to no [...]

Thorn Puts Past in Rearview, Wins PLM Opener; Texan Luza Notches First Five Flags Victory

By Chuck Corder Derek Thorn won’t ever escape his past at Five Flags Speedway. Going airborne at the 2011 Snowball Derby isn’t a memory you easily forget. But on Friday, the 29-year-old California late model driver was bound and determined to give Pensacola fans something positive to remember him by. Thorn did just that, setting the fast time during qualifying and then capturing the 20-lap Pro Late Model opening featuring Friday night. Thorn, who finished third at last year’s Snowball Derby, was driving the Kurt Jett-owned PLM out of the Jacksonville area. Brett Holmes settled for runner-up honors while Texan Ryan Luza, the PLM series points leader, rounded out the podium. Luza capped the night off with his first career Five Flags victory in the 30-lap nightcap. Junior Niedecken finished second after he finished fourth in the opener. “It’s always enjoyable coming here,” Thorn said. “I can’t thank Kurt Jett and his family for this awesome opportunity. [...]

Fireworks Exploding all Around Him, Roderick Remains Calm to Score First Victory at Five Flags

By Chuck Corder The fireworks came in bunches Friday night at Five Flags Speedway. Above the famed half-mile oval thanks to the track’s annual pyrotechnical display. And for 100 laps on every inch of the abrasive asphalt. There was past series champion Daniel Hemric who saw his valiant charge from the tail end come up empty. There was perennial contender and defending Blizzard Series and Southern Super Series champion Bubba Pollard, whose night ended with a whimper after staying in the top-five for 90 of the 100 laps. There was 14-year-old Harrison Burton, son of NASCAR star turned NBC analyst Jeff Burton, learning valuable lessons about restarts. When all the beating and banging settled, though, it was 22-year-old young gun Casey Roderick who stood above the damage to capture the Rubber & Specialties 100, the second of four Deep South Crane Rentals Blizzard Series races this year. Roderick became the fifth different Southern Super Series winner [...]

Luza Hopes a Possible Allen Turner PLM Championship Season Could Be Catapult to Stardom

By Chuck Corder At some point during childhood, almost every red-blooded American boy has aspirations of sports stardom. Ryan Luza, 18, is no different. Heck, one of his first memories came at Talladega Superspeedway. Decked out in a Dale Earnhardt Sr. fire suit and operating a “mini-Intimidator” — a No. 3 motorized go-kart — the then toddler patrolled the pits and infield among the Mardi Gras atmosphere that’s synonymous with ’dega. “I couldn’t get enough,” Luza now says. The Cypress, Texas, native has spent his whole life around racing and has grand visions of swapping paint with NASCAR royalty in the not-so-distant future. Spend a few minutes talking with Luza, though, and you’ll quickly realize he carries the type of intestinal fortitude that could one day turn his dreams into reality. And the college freshman grasps what a potential Allen Turner Pro Late Model track championship at Five Flags Speedway could mean for his blossoming career. “To [...]

Memorable Gulf Coast Weekend Ends with Win and Points Lead for Smith

Texas Driver Ends Long Winless Streak   AUSTIN, TX. --This past weekend is one that Casey Smith and his team won't forget for a long time.  The Austin, Texas native made the trip to the Alabama/Florida border area memorable as he went home with a victory and the Southern Super Series point lead. Smith ended a winless drought on Saturday night at Mobile International Speedway in Irvington, Alabama and finished third on Friday night to end the weekend as the point leader in the Southern Super Series. On Saturday night, he dominated by leading every lap in the 100-lap event at the high-banked, half-mile oval. "We have been struggling here.  We dominated in 2007 and 2008 along with having a good car in 2009, but since then we have been struggling every since," an elated Smith said in victory lane.  "This is the best car we have ever had here and it feels good [...]

With Stars Piling Up DNFs, Grissom Scores Victory in Blizzard Series Opener

By Chuck Corder Five Flags Speedway has been the catapult for quite a few famous sons of legendary NASCAR drivers in recent years. Chase Elliott, son of “Million Dollar” Bill, won the Snowball Derby in 2011 and the current Hendrick Motorsports driver is line to hop in Jeff Gordon’s Sprint Cup ride next year. Most recently, it was 17-year-old John Hunter Nemechek, offspring of Joe, hoisting the Tom Dawson trophy last December. On Friday night, another son etched his name in Five Flags lore during the opening Super Late Model race of 2015 at America’s Favorite Home Track. Kyle Grissom, son of former Nationwide Series champion Steve Grissom, held off a spectacular field to win the Mt. Dew Kickstart 100, the first of four Deep South Crane Rentals Blizzard Series race of the year. “That was pretty awesome to win here,” said the 25-year-old Grissom, whose father won in Pensacola in 1986. “We came here [...]
