For most drivers, an 18th place finish in the season opener at Daytona would be a downer to start the year, but for Bret Holmes his Daytona finish is just a new beginning. After a 10th place finish in the points standings in 2018 the family owned race team went back to the drawing board with equipment, cars, people and most importantly the addition of new crew chief, Shane Huffman. A veteran of the NASCAR Gander Mountain Truck Series, Huffman led Brandon Jones and Harrison Burton to wins last year in the ARCA Series, the pairing with Holmes has paid dividends from their first lap. "Everything is different this year, we were faster at the test, right off the trailer. We ran up front in the race and there is a lot of confidence with our race team," offered Holmes. Holmes hails from Munford, Alabama population 1,292 a stone's throw from Talladega Superspeedway [...]
After a thrilling three wide finish in the season opener at Daytona International Speedway the ARCA Series is headed to Pensacola's 5 Flags Speedway on March the 9th for the first time in over 20 years! Bringing ARCA back to Pensacola took a collaborative effort from two heavyweight racing promoters, Tim Bryant and Bob Sargent. Sargent's Track Enterprises already host five ARCA Menards Racing Series events including Nashville and the Dirt races, while the Bryant Family has brought the Snowball Derby to new heights never seen before in its 50 plus year history. "Hosting an ARCA event is a huge undertaking and we could not have found a better partner in Bob Sargent to help bring one of the most exciting series to one of America's favorite short tracks," said Bryant. The last time the ARCA Series raced in Pensacola was in 1996, when a young Frank Kimmel took home his only second [...]

Story by Speed51.com When Speed51.com reported Monday that Dan Spence was stepping down from the Five Flags Speedway / Southern Super Series race director position, the first question people asked was, “Who will be the new race director?” That question was answered Tuesday, as Nicholas Rogers will step into the role for the 2019 racing season. Rogers will travel with the Southern Super Series and serve as the race director for events at Five Flags Speedway such as the prestigious Snowball Derby. In his new role, the 40-year-old from Pensacola, Florida hopes to bring an element of fun back into the sport. “That’s something that we’ve all been talking about recently, whether it’s from the racer’s standpoint, the official’s standpoint or even the fan’s standpoint. We’ve got to get the fun back into the sport,” Rogers told Speed51.com. “Most importantly, from the official’s side of it, get a team built back up [...]

Whether it be from the flag stand, the tower or the tech line, he's nearly seen it all. That will change in 2019 as he is preparing to step down from his position as race director and return to his roots on the flag stand here. "It's not that I didn’t enjoy going to the race track, but it just wasn’t quite the same. I wanted to sort of get back to where I started," Spence told Speed51.com. "I’ve always enjoyed being on the flag stand. I did that for many, many years. I thought that I would try to finish out [...]

Hicks Closes Out Memorable 51st Annual Snowball Derby with Milestone Pro Trucks Derby Victory In years past, Snowball Derby Pro Trucks races have been marathon, caution-plagued affairs at Five Flags Speedway. At the 51st annual the Snowball Derby, roles were reversed. After a long day chocked full of yellows and reds in the Modifieds 75 lapper and the Allen Turner Hyundai Pro Late Model Snowflake 100, the WCIparts.com Pro Trucks edition of the Derby was clean for all 50 laps. Teenager Josh Hicks passed pole sitter Steven Davis, a past Pro Trucks Derby champion, on Lap 47 and pulled away to score the biggest victory of his young career. “This means a lot,” Hicks told Speed51.com’s Bob Dillner in Victory Lane. “I’ve gotta thank the man upstairs for a bit of good luck. We had a lotta obstacles to overcome this year.” The lone obstacle the Senoia, Ga., driver had to get past on Sunday [...]
So ‘Purty’ for Purdy: Nineteen-Year-Old Driver Outlasts Weather, Field to Win Snowflake 100 By Chuck Corder The unrelenting mist and bitter cold were no match for the fire in Chase Purdy’s belly. The 19-year-old Mississippi native, who now calls North Carolina home, etched his name in short-track racing lore by winning the Allen Turner Hyundai Snowflake 100 on Sunday at Five Flags Speedway, as the 51st annual Snowball Derby came to a close one week later than expected. A race that was postponed on Dec. 1 because of thunderstorms and flooding, the 2018 running of the Snowflake 100 will go down as one of the more memorable editions of Pro Late Model’s biggest race. After nine cautions, a slew of red flags and only 12 of the 34 cars, which started the race, left on Pensacola’s high banks, Purdy withstood weather and aggressive drivers to lead the final 72 laps. “It was as eventful a [...]
1-8FEB-B95347ECEEE3}mid://00000010/ Grill Scores Back-to-Back Modifieds Derby Titles in Race Shortened Because of Weather, Wrecks By Chuck Corder Win or lose, Augie Grill typically keeps his emotions in check. Every victory certainly matters to him, but it is Grill’s constant humility that has won him a grandstands full of fans over his hall of fame career. In capturing the Modifieds running of the Snowball Derby on Sunday for a second consecutive year, Grill was more subdued after the 75-lap race was shortened to 71, saw 12 cautions and two drivers leave Five Flags Speedway in ambulances. “This is pretty cool,” Grill said. “It’s the seventh time on Snowball Derby weekend that I’ve won a race. I like having my name on something nobody has. I wish we could’ve run those final laps green.” Weather conditions prevented that along with a T-bone collision between Jason Moorman and Billy Melvin that brought out the final yellow of the [...]
0: The number of times the Snowflake 100 winner has gone on to win the Snowball Derby. That trend will continue this year, as Snowball Derby winner Noah Gragson is not entered for the Snowflake 100. 2: Justin South is a two-time pole winner in the Snowflake 100. His best finish was a third in 2013. 3: Augie Grill is a three-time winner of the Snowflake 100 as is Chase Elliott, who is not racing this year. Those two could welcome Bubba Pollard to the three-time club if he wins the Snowflake again. 7: Grand American Race Cars have won seven of the last nine Snowflake 100’s. Six of those have come from Augie Grill and Chase Elliott, with the other coming from Bubba Pollard. 16: By our count, 16 drivers were originally planning to run both the Snowflake and the Snowball Derby. Due to Mother Nature, that number is expected to decrease [...]
