Five Flags Speedway
Logan Fanning is Demo Derby King; Purvis in Mods, Griffin in Outlaws, Robinson Sportsmen
An afternoon thunderstorm did nothing to dampen the competitive spirits of the racers at Five Flags Speedway on Friday Night. After a brief delay for track drying efforts, a near capacity crowd watched as the racing action kicked into high gear with the Modified of Mayhem Tour’s 50 Lap Feature. Marion Ohio driver Kyle Purvis returned to Florida to see if he could double down, as he was victorious in the April 26th opener. Even though a re-draw put Purvis on the Pole, he had to work hard to stay in front.
A lightning fast Jeff Letson looked to be the fastest car in the field, but his engine expired as he was challenging Purvis past the halfway mark. Mayhem points leader Zach Knowles had another excellent run, rebounding from a 9th place starting spot to finish in the runner up position behind Purvis
Hueytown, Alabama driver Justin Bonnett finished third.
The Faith Chapel Outlaw Feature followed with more side by side racing, with Pensacola’s Bill Tutchtone taking the early lead, only to be overtook by Indiana transplant Derrick Griffin on lap 10. Griffin would lead the rest of the way for his first ever 5 Flags Speedway Victory, while Tutchtone maintained second and Bubba Winslow finished third.
The Dock of Pensacola Beach Sportsman Feature was dominated by Mobile’s Chad Robinson, who was subbing for an injured Red Dog Reynolds. There was a battle royal for the runner up spot between last event Winner Shana Ard and veteran Jim Pokrant, which ultimately was the way they finished. Pokrant’s car failed post race weight regulations however, handing the third place trophy to Points Leader Mark Barnhill.
Last but not least, the always popular Michles & Booth Demolition Derby took to the front stretch. 15 cars slammed and banged their way into each other, and when the smoke cleared it was Milton Florida’s Logan Fannin, whose 1990 Lincoln Town Car was the last one running. Bobby Suarez finished second in a Cadillac, while Donald Hardy took third in a Ford Crown Victoria.
Five Flags Speedway will return to action on August 16th with the Allen Turner Road to the Snowflake Series, plus Pro Trucks, Outlaws, and Pure Stocks.
