A Peek at Story on Ty Majeski

DERBY IN STORE FOR MAJESKI MAGIC?

Wisconsin driver has something up sleeve with three podiums in last four Derbys

By Chuck Corder

Who’s winning Sunday?

It’s the question on the lips of everyone roaming Five Flags Speedway’s premises this week. The murmur has echoed from the pits, bouncing off the turn walls and filling the seats and concession stands before becoming a deep hum of prognostications beyond the gates into the camping grounds.

Choices vary. Some go with their heart; others pick from a driver’s past history.

Ty Majeski’s only appearances at Pensacola’s high banks have come at the last five Snowball Derby races. But the 25-year-old Wisconsin driver, who has three ARCA wins this season and raced in NASCAR’s Xfinity and Gander Outdoors Truck Series, has made the most of his opportunities at Five Flags.

In just his second start, Majeski set a track record of 16.120 seconds during 2015 Snowball Derby qualifying that still stands today. He has three top-three finishes, including a runner-up best last December.

“There are quite a few crown jewels in short-track racing and, obviously, the Derby is the top one, Majeski said. “Derby is the last one I want. It has always been something every year. We’ve had great racecars, and it just hasn’t gone our way. We’ll control what we can and put ourselves in the best position to win.

Majeski has been so close. Problems in the pits plagued those near misses in 2015, his first of back-to-back third-place results, and in 2018 when he never could quite get to the bumper of eventual champion Noah Gragson.

This year, rules officials have inserted controlled cautions into the race, meaning the order you go into the pits is the order you’ll come out. Majeski is hopeful that change will play right into his team’s hands.

“Our motto has always been, though, that if the car is fast enough, we should be able to overcome it, he said.

Story continues in the official program, on sale for $5.
