Outlaws, Crowns, Legacy Cars All Shine on Opening Night for 5 Flags

By Chuck Corder

The roar of engines echoed up and down Pine Forest Road.
And they weren’t coming from commuter traffic.
Racing returned to Five Flags Speedway on Friday night as the 2026 season got underway with a familiar face back in Victory Lane, a first-time winner and a Legacy Series show that if you blinked you missed it.

Faith Chapel Outlaws
To Logan Boyett’s standards, he had a subpar season in 2025.
The 2024 Faith Chapel Outlaws track champion at Five Flags won just once last year and finished fourth in his title defense.
Boyett made a triumphant return Friday in the Outlaws 40-lap feature. He took the lead from pole sitter Gary Goodwin following a restart just past halfway. Boyett kept Bubba Winslow and Kody Brusso at bay to secure his fifth win since 2024.

“The last 15 laps, the car was on a rail. It was night and day difference from the start,” said Boyett, who shared emotional hugs and kisses with his family. “It’s one night, and we’re gonna take it one night at a time this year.”
It was a Pensacola sweep on the podium, as Winslow finished runner-up and Brusso came home third in her first race back at Five Flags in five years.
“I really have to thank my guys,” Winslow said. “They’re the ones that got (the car) here. I just hopped in and drove it.”
“I landed an awesome opportunity. This car really nice,” said Brusso, the pole sitter after the die roll. “Third’s not bad. We can’t complain. We plan on running for a championship this year.”
Defending track champ Timothy Watson blew a motor in practice and was unable to qualify.
Goodwin was impressive early on. He took the lead on the opening lap when Brusso stumbled and was strong while battling through several cautions.
But it was a restart with 24 laps completed that cost him. Goodwin spun his tires and fell from first to sixth in less than half a lap.

Story and Bleich Roofing Crown Stocks
Austin Reeves was bound and determined to end his drought at Five Flags on Friday.
The Enterprise, Ala., driver recorded his first career win at the famed half-mile asphalt oval when he captured the Story and Bleich Roofing Crown Stocks 25-lap feature.

Reeves took the lead from eventual runner-up Cody Griggs on Lap 5 and held off Griggs and Dough Thorpe Jr. in the final 20 laps.
“I’m glad to finally get a win here,” Reeves said. “We were so close last year.”
Thorpe was fast in qualifying (21.661 seconds) but settled for a third starting spot after he rolled a “3” on the die-roll invert. He quickly climbed to second behind Griggs early before finishing third.
“We were fighting an overheating problem,” Thorpe said. “We were running at 230 degrees at one point and lost power. We thought we had something for Austin, but congratulations to him. He’ll be tough going forward.”
Griggs got by Thorpe for second on Lap 20 to post his best career finish at Five Flags.
“That was a great race,” Griggs said. “It’s feels good to make the podium here. I hope for many more.”

Samson Performance and Restoration Legacy Series
No deficit was insurmountable for Carson Green on Friday at Five Flags.
The Dayton, Texas, driver went from the tail-end of the field to the lead in two laps and withstood a valiant charge from Justin Reeves to claim the 20-lap feature for the Samson Performance and Restoration Legacy Series.
Green and Reeves were the class of the field and battled door-to-door early on before they both spun on Lap 4 as the pair headed into Turn No. 4.
On the restart, both Green and Reeves stormed back to the front, but it was Green who was able to reach clean air first. He held onto the lead the rest of the way despite runner-up Brian Benedict and Reeves, who finished third, applying pressure all night.
“Those guys are really fast and really good drivers,” Benedict said of his fellow podium finishers.
