Butcher Wins Blizzard; Smith Takes Mods

Butcher Stays Hot, Becomes First Blizzard Series Driver to Open with 3 in a Row

With history awaiting drivers in all four turns, the Five Flags Speedway record books are always nearby.
Cole Butcher is keeping track historians and statisticians on their toes in his quest toward immortality at the famed half-mile asphalt oval. Butcher, from North of the border, accomplished a Five Flags’ first after handily winning the Tibbetts Lumber 100 on Friday.
The hottest Super Late Model driver in the sport became the first wheelman in Deep South Crane Rentals Blizzard Series to win the opening three races of the season. The legendary Bubba Pollard won three consecutive Blizzard Series races from 2017-2018, but never in the same calendar year.
“We’re on a roll,” Butcher said. “It just goes to how hard this team works at the racetrack. I can’t thank everybody on this team enough.”
The Nova Scotia native and his Wilson Motorsports crew have been virtually unbeatable in 2025. The Tibbetts Lumber 100 marks Butcher’s sixth major SLM win this year.
Matt Craig finished second and Stephen Nasse came home third.
“This is such a tough field of cars to race against,” Craig said. “Cole is a great competitor, and I don’t feel too bad finishing second to him. We’ve just gotta find a little more grip.”
Butcher set the pace Friday, just like he did in the first two Blizzard Series races. Starting on the outside of Row 1, he was beating and banging with polesitter Jake Finch for clean air almost as soon as the opening green flag dropped.
Butcher cleared Finch between Turn Nos. 1 and 2 on Lap 3 and was quickly in the wind. The rest were left to hopelessly navigate their way up to Butcher’s bumper-an unenviable order.
“When you get in dirty air, it’s hard to do anything behind these cars,” Nasse said. “We’ve just gotta go back and work. I wish I gave my guys a better fight. We’ll work on a few things and keep digging.”

Modifieds of Mayhem

Surrounded by his grandkids in Victory Lane, Richie Smith basked in the moment.
“I don’t know how many more years I can drive ’em,” the 47-year-old Smith said of his beloved open-wheeled Modifieds. “I have to take advantage of these years, for sure.”
He seized the moment Friday night at Five Flags Speedway. Driving for the same team as Modifieds magician Cody Stickler, Smith looked similar to his central Florida buddy by winning the 50-lap Modifieds of Mayhem feature.
Smith started on the pole and led flag-to-flag on hie way to his seventh Modifieds victory of the season.
“Since Cody drove this thing, and kicked butt with it, I should be able to do it, too, right?” Smith jokingly asked.
Jared Maupin finished second for a career-best Mods of Mayhem result.
“The competition is pretty intense,” Maupin said. “Hopefully, we keep it rolling.”
Timmy Moore had a rocket ship, as he recovered from an early-race incident to finish third.
“We’re really happy to have third,” Moore said. “The car was on rails. I don’t know if we would’ve had anything for Richie, but I would’ve like to see.”

Faith Chapel Outlaws

It had been nearly two full years since Bubba Winslow had captured a checkered flag at Five Flags Speedway.
He got some unexpected and much-needed inspiration earlier this month when he watched son Troy win the 6-to-9 age group of the track’s annual children’s bicycle races.
“I reckon he had to break the ice for me,” Winslow joked of Troy’s convincing victory.
Dear ol’ Dad had a convincing performance in the Faith Chapel Outlaws 35-lap feature Friday. Winslow started on the pole and led at every turn.
Timothy Watson finished a distant second and Carter Taylor came home third.
“I was really happy with the car tonight,” Watson said. “The car didn’t fire off as quick as it needed to. But I’m happy for Bubba because he has been fighting that thing all year, and he finally got it down.”
Winslow dedicated the victory to the legacy of his grandfather who died exactly 5 years ago to Friday’s date. He also credited his resilient team.
“The guys on my team I’d put up against anyone in the world,” Winslow said. “I didn’t know if I’d get back. But this team, we don’t quit. We stay competitive. I wanna win because that’s what my guys and my sponsors deserve.”

The Dock on Pensacola Beach Sportsmen

Chad Robinson was out breath. Between the unbearable heat and strong runs from the McDonald Brothers, Robinson was tested Friday night at Five Flags Speedway.
Another win eased the stress for the Mobile hotshoe. Robinson won his third The Dock on Pensacola Beach Sportsmen 25-lap feature of the season Friday.
He erased a 1.5-second deficit and passed Daryl McDonald III on Lap 21 to seal the victory.
“That was hard on me,” Robinson said. “I really had to drive it tonight. It was a handful.”
Daryl McDonald III, “D3”, and younger brother Parker McDonald finished second and third, respectively.
D3 led for much of the race and was optimistic about Friday’s runner-up despite having a shot to win four laps from the finish.
“That was fun! Man, what a run,” D3 said. “We had a pretty good car and we’ll get back up there again.”
Since last June, Robinson has won seven of nine races at Five Flags, including his Sportsmen Derby in December.

Story and Bleich Roofing Crown Stocks

Starting spots don’t seem to matter to Adam Salter.
Race rules at Five Flags Speedway state the previous feature winner must start sixth, at best, the next race. Salter and sixth goes together like gumbo over rice.
For a third straight time Friday, Salter flexed his methodical muscles from sixth position en route to the Story and Bleich Roofing Crown Stocks 25-lap feature. The win gives him four consecutive overall—Salter started fifth for the first win of this streak on April 25.
“I was just riding in the beginning,” Salter said. “I was trying to get out of the way of all the traffic.”
Which there was a lot of in the 22-car field. While Chris Mitchell led for much of the first half of the race, Salter bided his time and watched a heated battle play out for second between defending track champion Doug Thorpe Jr. and Tyler Young.
Fortune shone on Salter on Lap 12 while misfortune found Thorpe and Young. The two came together in a wreck that put Thorpe out the race and Salter moved to second.
He took the lead a lap later and never looked back. Salter has won seven of 11 Crown Stocks features at Five Flags since August 2023.
“We’re winning so much I’ve stopped counting,” he joked.
Georgia driver Jason Lang finished runner-up and Pensacola’s Braeden Kitchen rounded out the podium.
“I enjoyed racing with Adam,” Lang said. “He’s fast. I’m gonna get there, though.”
No one’s figured out that riddle since April 11 when he finished second to Thorpe.

Samson Performance and Restoration Legacy Series (Allison Legacy)

Plenty of action was promised and plenty was delivered in the Samson
Performance and Restoration Legacy Series’ debut feature at Five Flags Speedway.
Carson Green wasn’t fazed by the fireworks happening in his rearview Friday. He took the lead on Lap 4 and won the 20-lap feature.
The Samson Performance and Restoration Legacy Series, formerly known as the Allison Legacy Series, are made up of scaled-down chassis of 1990s NASCAR Cup Series Chevrolet Monte Carlos and Ford Thunderbirds pumping a Mazda B2200 truck engine. Friday night’s field was made up of mostly Texan drivers, a few Mobile-area drivers and Cole Peavy represented Pensacola.
Riley Allen, who at one point restarted tail end for a spin, hustled her way to a runner-up finish and the aforementioned Peavy scored a third.
“I don’t even know how I pulled that off,” Allen said. “The competition is great.”
