Honeycutt Scores Third Derby Win in 2 Years After Mods 75-lap Victory

By Chuck Corder
5flagsspeedway.com reporter
Kaden Honeycutt returned last week to Five Flags Speedway as the reigning Snowball Derby champion.
While the Texan wasn’t able to defend his tigular, who finished third in Trucks points this year, topped a field of 30 other cars to win the Modifieds of Mayhem 75-lap Snowball Derby on Tuesday night.
“A racecar like this is what dreams are made of,” Honeycutt said. “It was just a rocket ship tonight. Just unbelievable by John Heil, who works his butt off to make these Modifieds better.”
The win marks Honeycutt’s third Derby championship in two years. In addition to winning the “big one” last year, he also won the Pro Trucks Derby. More impressive than the victory itself was who Honeycutt beat in the Mods 75-lapper Tuesday.
Cody Stickler was looking for an unprecedented fifth consecutive Mods Derby crown. He appeared to be en route to Victory Lane again when took the lead on Lap 2.
But Honeycutt was able to pass the four-time champ some 20 laps later and Stickler never recovered. The Pinellas Park driver brought his No. 46 to the pits before the race ended and finished an uncharacteristic 16th.
“This team is the reason I’ve made it to where I am today,” Honeycutt said of Heil and his crew. “They’ve helped me out so much, and I try to do my part for them by winning races like this.
“I love Modifieds racing. It has been the biggest learning tool in my career. This (car) is outta control and I absolutely love these things.”
Ohio driver Kyle Purvis finished runner-up and Indiana’s Matt Dimit rounded out the podium.

Pensacola’s Derrick Griffin had a roller coaster ride Tuesday. The Mods Derby winner in 2020, and an Outlaws Derby champ in 2023, broke one of the longest standing track records in qualifying. Griffin’s fast lap of 17.220 seconds replaced Donnie Hamrac’s 17.265-second mark from 12 years ago.
He began having engine issues immediately when the green flag dropped in the feature. Griffin was out of power several times throughout the race and prevented him from challenging Honeycutt for the victory.
“These guys are so tough,” an emotional Purvis said. “The car was awesome. Everyone worked their butts off.

“I’m speechless. One of these years, we’re gonna win it. I just don’t know when.”
Honeycutt was a full 5 seconds ahead of Purvis when he took the checkered flag.
“I didn’t have anything for Honeycutt, no way,” Dimit said. “They had a hot rod.”

Watson Dominates, Finally Wins Outlaws Snowball Derby Crown

By Chuck Corder
5flagsspeedway.com reporter

Timothy Watson has done a lot of winning at Five Flags Speedway.
Since 2021, the Panama City driver has won 12 Outlaws features and captured the Faith Chapel Outlaws track championship three different times, including this year.
But the 21-year-old had never won the big one. That all changed Tuesday night as the 58th annual Snowball Derby presented by FloSports came to a conclusion.
Watson was a tour de force, leading every lap of the Faith Chapel Outlaws 75-lap feature and easily recorded his first career Snowball Derby victory.
“This car was on a rail,” Watson said. “It was absolutely a fast car. Dad and I did lotta work since Bubba (Winslow) picked up a lotta speed in the middle of this year. I think we have it dialed in now.”
To say the least.

Watson won by 2.7 seconds against runner-up Jeremy Wiliams, and that wasn’t his most impressive lead of the night. He was leading by more than 7 seconds when the fourth and final caution flew with 67 laps completed. Watson had nearly a half-a-track lead for sustained periods of the 75-lapper.
Williams put up a valiant effort to stay with the leader following the last restart, but Watson easily pulled away down the front straightaway.
“It was a good run for us,” said Williams, a Forestdale, Ala., native. “We’re learning every race, getting better and better. We work hard. We just have to work a little harder.”

San Antonio driver Jared Maupin moved to third after recently crowned Derby champion Stephen Nasse had his podium result was thrown out in technical inspection

Red-Hot Robinson Records Back-to-Back Sportsman Snowball Derby Titles*

Chad Robinson is no longer snakebitten at Five Flags Speedway.
After years of close calls, the Mobile driver has found his groove in recent years at Pensacola’s high banks.
He won his first career Sportsman Snowball Derby championship a year ago before winning The Dock on Pensacola Beach Sportsmen track championship this season at Five Flags.
Robinson backed it all up Tuesday night at the 58th annual Snowball Derby presented by FloSports. He won his second consecutive The Dock Sportsman 35-lap crown with a dominant performance to close Derby Week.
“It’s been a good year,” the humble Robinson said. “I’m wore out. The car has been phenomenal. I’m glad to be back up here with another Derby win.”
B.J. Leytham, who won the Sportsmen Derby in 2019, finished runner-up. Charlie Melvin came home third.
“Second was great for us,” Leytham said. “We didn’t have a car to finish second. It’s always better to be lucky than good.”
The race got off to a chaotic start. Maddox Langham, starting third, jumped the opening green flag and flew ahead of Robinson, the polesitter, before the field reached Turn No. 1.
Race officials black-flagged Langham, which set off older brother Jonathan Langham. Big brother vehemently disagreed with the official decision and his displeasure was on full display.
Under caution, Jonathan Langham nearly threw a guardrail from the pits onto the track surface before thinking better of it. Instead, he sprinted up the front stretch and opened the gate at the flagstand when the field was on the back straightaway.
Jonathan Langham was on his way to the tower to argue with race officials, but instead they met him at the bottom of the stairs where he was turned away after a few moments.

Loper Gets One for the Thumb, Collects 5th Pure Stocks Derby Crown

Robert Loper didn’t race once at Five Flags Speedway in the regular season.
Loper tended to his son, Eli—at 15, a budding hotshoe himself who battles chronic pancreatitis—and rehabbing from his own surgery.
Robert Loper made the most of his one appearance on the biggest stage of the year. The Theodore, Ala., driver won his fifth career Pure Stocks Snowball Derby title Tuesday night.
Loper captured the Lloyd’s Glass Pure Stocks 25-lap feature to close the 58th annual Snowball Derby presented by FloSports.
“It was a hard-fought year for us,” he said. “Me and Eli both had surgery. I wasn’t sure we’d be able to race at all tonight. But we had a lotta people behind us and we wanted to show them how thankful we are for their support.”
Dylan Courtney and Jimmy Hollingsworth finished second and third, respectively.
Loper led every lap of a caution-plagued race. The opening green had to be dropped twice before the 17-car field completed a lap.
Another restart netted only one more completed lap before another yellow flag flew. A red flag came moments later when Gary Burkett collided with Corey Ryland on his driver’s side and Ryland flipped.
He was already spinning after getting jostled by another car seconds earlier. The hit from Burkett knocked Ryland’s No. 5 on its roof before it bounced back on all four wheels.
“These guys are fast and I don’t come out here enough,” Hollinsworth said.

Salter Punctuates Stellar Season with 2nd Straight Crown Stocks Invitational

Adam Salter wasn’t about to rest on the many laurels he earned in 2025.
The Andalusia, Ala., driver won 15 races and capped the year in style by winning the 25-lap Story and Bleich Crown Stocks Invitational on Tuesday, the final night of the 58th annual Snowball Derby presented by FloSports at Five Flags Speedway.

It marked Salter’s second consecutive victory in the CS Invitational. He has now won a total of eight races in the last 12 months at Five Flags. Salter captured the track title this season with five during the regular season.
“We won a buncha races all over country,” he said. “I don’t know how many wins, but we had a lotta fun. I always wanted to come down here and race. And I’m so glad they brought the Crown Stocks here a few years ago.”
Salter’s script for the CS Invitational looked awfully familiar to his recent performances at the famed half-mile asphalt oval. He started on the pole, as he did Tuesday, or near it and left the field in his wake.
Jason Lang finished runner-up and Chris Mitchell rounded out the podium.
Salter is quick to give credit for his historic season.

“It’s all the BMR guys,” he said, referencing his Bare Minimum Racing teammates. “Without their help I couldn’t do all this. We won the track championship here. We won another at South Alabama Speedway. Let’s come back next year and have some more fun.”

Unblemished. Unbeatable. Undefeated. Davis Wins 3rd Trucks Derby to Complete Perfect Season

Few get to sniff perfection, much less experience it.
Steven Davis is a chosen one.
The Theodore, Ala., wheelman won all five Gulf Real Estate Group Pro Trucks features in 2025 at Five Flags Speedway en route to the track championship. All that was left was winning at the 58th annual Snowball Derby presented by FloSports.
Davis led every lap of the Gulf Real Estate Group Pro Trucks 50-lap feature to collect his third career Pro Trucks championship at the Derby. Demonstrating how good Davis was from start to finish Tuesday, he ran his fastest lap of the race on Lap 50.

“It feels pretty good,” Davis said. “I’m just the lucky guy who gets to drive this thing. The truck’s fast. I have great people behind me who I couldn’t do it without. I’m grateful for their work.”
Davis said his team found wire issues after qualifying and repaired them before the feature. It showed, as he led all 50 laps and kept oncomers, such as Kaden Honeycutt and Matthew Laprade, at bay.
Laprade finished second and Carter Whelan rounded out the podium.
“We put so much work in the truck the whole year,” Laprade said. “We’ve done so much to get this thing better.”

Honeycutt, who won a Modifieds Derby earlier Tuesday, tried to take a few peeks at what getting by Davis might look like. Each time Davis rejected his attempts by pulling into more clean air.
Honeycutt fell off and his night was over on Lap 47 when his No. 10 truck caught fire.
Laprade came next for Davis. He lost to the No. 54, the truck Laprade was in Tuesday, earlier this year at Mobile International Speedway when Grant Thompson got Davis.
He wasn’t going to make the same mistake again. Laprade tried to pinch Davis down on a restart with five to go, but Davis didn’t take the bait and was in the wind
